GP Pathways – Overview
Please Note - The information below is provided as a guide only. Further information and guidance on the registration requirements for practicing medicine in Australia will be supplied to you when you have successfully obtained a job offer.
As an Australian trained doctor and a Fellow of the RACGP including conjoint examination with RACGP (Malaysia and Hong Kong), you are able to practice unsupervised in General Practice in Australia.
Category 1- Fully comparable doctors
Fully comparable doctors are considered to be at the same level as Australian trained specialists for General Practice. For these doctors there is no need for College examination leading to Fellowship, no assessment of General Practice experience, and no further training required.
To satisfy the category Fully comparable you need to have one of the following qualifications:
- Canada Certificate in Family Medicine from College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) + Evidence of Canadian Qualifying Examinations Part 1 + 2 post 1992
- Ireland Graduate of the Irish College of General Practitioners (ICGP) holding MICGP membership
- NZ Fellow of The Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners (FRNZCGP)
- UK Member of the Royal College of General Practitioners (MRCGP) holding the JCPTGP certificate or MRCGP member holding Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board (PMETB) qualification
Category 2- Partially comparable doctors
Partially comparable doctors are considered to be at the level of an Australian trained advanced trainee in General Practice who require further training / supervised practice and assessment to be recognized as fully comparable.
To satisfy the category Partially comparable you need to have one of the following qualifications:
- Belgium Specialist Certificate in General Practice / Family Medicine. Click here to read a testimony from GP from Belgium.
- Canada Certificate in Family Medicine from the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC)*
- Denmark Specialist Certificate in Family Medicine
- Netherlands Certificate of Specific Training for General Practice. Click here to read a testimony from GP from The Netherlands.
- Norway Certificate of Specific Training for General Medical Practice
- Singapore Master of Medicine in Family Medicine
- South Africa Registration as a Family Physician with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) (formerly South African Medical and Dental Council) or Master of Family Medicine or Master of Prax Medicine or Member of The College of Family Practitioners of the South African College of General Practice (FSACGP). - Sweden Certificate of Specific Training for General Practice
- UK Membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners
- UK Certificate of the Joint Committee in Postgraduate Training for General Practice
- UK Certificate from the Post Medical Education Training Board

Category 3 - Partially comparable doctors
This category is new and medical registration requirements for this group are currently under negotiation with various medical boards.
Partially comparable doctors are considered to be at the level of an Australian trained advanced trainee in General Practice who requires further training / supervised practice and assessment to be recognized as fully comparable.
Eligible Category 3 doctors will have gained their qualifications in general practice from the following Countries:
